Counseling Research Guide

Become a Counselor

Counselors advise people with a range of conditions and circumstances, such as addiction, depression, or anxiety. The educational requirements for counselors can vary by speciality and location. Addictions counselors typically need at least a bachelor's degree, while mental health counselors typically require a master's degree and internship. Certain states require counselors to have a state-issued license for private practice. *

Internship or Practicum Required

Most prospective counselors must have supervised experience, usually in the form of an internship or practicum. These types of experiences allow students to gain a better understand of the field in an applied setting. Candidates must complete their internship or practicum before they can qualify for state licensure. The required number of hours of internship varies by state or institution.
