MLA 9 Writing Guide

General MLA Document Formatting (1.1, 1.2, and 1.4)

1. If your instructor does not specify font style and size requirements, choose an easy-to read font (ex. Calibri and Times New Roman) in 12-point font. Use the same font style and size throughout the paper.

2.  Double space your document, using 1- inch margins on all sides of your document.

3.  Create a header that includes your last name and the page number 1/2" from the top of page.

First Page (1.3)

MLA does not require a title page.

The first page includes 5 elements (double-spaced, without the numbering, and flush to the left margin):

  1. Student Name
  2.  Instructor Name
  3. Course
  4. Date
  5. Center the Title: use standard capitalization

Headings (1.4)

Headings are used to signal the organization and structure of the paper.   MLA does not have a required system of headings, but does have recommendations. Be sure to be consistent throughout your document. No heading only appears once in a paper.

Example: Formatted, unnumbered

Level 1 Heading: bold, flush left, title-style capitalization
Level 2 Heading: flush left, title-style capitalization
Level 3 Heading: italicized, flush left, title-style capitalization
