MLA 9 Writing Guide

List of Works Cited (1.6)

Include complete citations in the Works Cited section.

General Guidelines:

  • Start References on a new page, continuing the page number
  • Double-space the entire page
  • Alphabetize by the first word of the reference
  • Use a hanging indent.

Basic Format:

In your citation, the elements should be listed in the following order:

  1. Author or creator.
  2. Title of source.
  3. Title of container,
  4. Other contributors,
  5. Version,
  6. Number,
  7. Publisher,
  8. Publication date,
  9. Location.

Each element should be followed by the corresponding punctuation mark shown above. Repeat items 3-9, as needed, for items that are in multiple containers, e.g. a chapter in a book in a series or an article in a journal in a database.

Book

Author. Title. Publisher, year.

Jones, Alfred. The Best Sandwich Ever. Knopf, 2005.

Corcoran, Kellye, and Alfred Jones. Reinventing the Best Sandwich Ever. New York: Knopf, 2007.

Corcoran, Kellye, et al. All About the Brie. Knopf, 2008.

Journal Article

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal, vol #, no. #, date, pages. Name of database, DOI or URL
